I spent the afternoon in the movie theater with my husband. First we went to see Star Trek, and then we went to see Angels & Demons.
First of all, I think it’s been established that aside from LOST, I am not a sci-fi fan. Second of all. Star Trek. Seriously, Star Trek. But you know what? It was a good movie. I did drift off at what was probably a crucial point of the movie and I missed the whole (spoiler alert) time travel thingy. But all in all, I really enjoyed the movie.
And then there was Angels & Demons. I loved it. It was a lot better than the DaVinci Code. A lot. I’d be curious to know just how much was filmed on location because I’d like to know if I was seeing Rome and The Vatican as it really exists.
Now back to Star Trek. James T. Kirk is born at the beginning of the movie, and his mother asks his father if they should name JTK after his father who was named Tiberius (did you follow that?). And JTK’s father says, Hell no! Tiberius is a terrible name! Okay, so I paraphrased the Hell no! But the rest is a quote.
And I agree.
My husband wanted to name a son Tiberius after JTK and my reply to that was exactly the same. Hell no! Tiberius is a terrible name! Thank goodness we had a daughter! But, I must admit that after 13 years the name has grown on me.

I wonder what the school children would try to nickname a little boy named Tiberius. Either Captain Kirk or Emperor I suppose. I think the Emperor Tiberius was kind of handsome. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiberius

My friend Toby is actually Tobias. He hates it. I told him from now on he should tell everyone Toby is short for Tiberius – I think it’s cool!

Very little of A&D was filmed on location, all of the churches (and even the 4 rivers fountain in Piazza Navona) were recreated in LA. However, it looks pretty damn close to the original, just less people and scaffolding!
Somehow, I thougoht that everyone knew that the T was for Tiberius. But then, I’ve been a Star Trek fan since the very beginning (1966) — really too old for a “kid show.” When they began showing TOS on local stations in the mid-1970′s, I watched voraciously; my little kids loved it too, and I still call them The Next Generation.
I am well aware that some episodes were better than others, but I still can’t understand anyone who doesn’t like Star Trek. (Some of my favorite episodes are from Deep Space Nine.)
Yes, I knew that the T in James T. Kirk stood for Tiberius, because I am a Star Trek (TOS only) junkie. I’m glad to hear you liked the movie. I haven’t seen it but definitely want to see it before it leaves the theatres.
And I’m THRILLED to hear that you liked “Angels and Demons.” Our local critic (my boss) hated it, but he hated it because he hated the book–and I loved the book. Yeah, it’s totally unbelievable strictly from a time line, but I thought the premise and the plot was great, in a “24″ kinda way! (I’ll bet Tom Hanks doesn’t go to the bathroom in 24 hrs either)
