My husband has had Sirius radio for a while and while it's better than depending on regular radio on a trip, there is still a lot of repeat as the others have said. I don't have an iPod, but I use my BlackBerry as a music player, which can be connected to car radio via the auxiliary jack in the same way. That is my choice for travel for the inevitable radio dead zones.

I got Hub XM for Christmas a couple of years ago. He got tired of it. He says there are only a few good stations and they play the same music over and over and over again. So when I got my new-used vehicle earlier this year, and it came with XM, I never subscribed.
HOWEVER, said new vehicle also came with an iPod plug and it ROCKS. Every time I load new music onto my laptop, and sync it with the iPod, I also get new tunes for the car. :o)
For the price if the XM receiver and the subscription, you could totally get an iPod jack for your car.
